2008 Fishing Reports

Sunday, May 25th

Honor the soldiers who have died in the war on this Memorial Day.

I must apologize for not posting as I should have. I have not been feeling that great
and just could not keep up with everything.
We still have bait available: Live, iced & frozen herring.
Out of bloods and sands until Tuesday's delivery.
Many stripers have been coming in for weighing and cleaning.
Today, the river temperature climbed to 64 dgrees.
Stripers are showing up in the shallows with more noticable spawning occuring.

Weights up to 33 lbs. Trollers & Baiters have both been doing well.

If you are a Troller, please keep in mind that the balls and cables cut into the stripers as they are spawning.
Spawning is needed to preserve and enhance this great fishery.
If we are to hold onto this fishery, proper techniques and sometimes just common sense must be used.
Reports of banging, snagging, cutting, excess & large treble hooks and just bad fishing by trollers will make it difficult for everyone if DEC decides to do something about this.

Friday, May 9th

Tournament weekend, hope you have your form in!
Bait available: bloodworms, sandworms,
nightcrawlers, live, iced & frozen herring. Bar n' cafe open for the weekend.
This has been a good week for most of the fishermen, both on shore and by boat.
Today, we weighed in a 41 lb. striper. There have been many larger stripers brought in for weighing
between Poughkeepsie and Catskill. This should be by all past records a great weekend on the river.
Trollers may be outdone this weekend, stripers are starting to prefer live bait.
Be prepared onboard, so take along live bait and your favorite lures.

Friday, May 2nd

The past several days have not been good ones on the river or the creek.
Herring have been impossible to jig or net. Stripers were off with the cold front,
but we have had several large stripers weighed in the past two days. Wednesday,
5th & 6th Graders from Maple Ridge went fishing for the day and
landed a 26 lb. 39" striper. Thursday, Jim Gibbons boated a 47.6 lbs. 45 1/4"
along with Rick Carlson 37.9 lbs. 45". Friday - Jim Gibbons, Jr. age 10 boated a
34 lbs. 44" striper. Maybe this is a sign that the larger stripers are heading our way.
Water temperatures have dropped several degrees.

Bait available: Live herring, iced herring, frozen herrng, bloodworms, sandworms and nightcrawlers.

Bait shop opening 6:00 AM Saturday & Sunday. Weekdays at 8:00 AM.

Fuel dock open - Gas $4.20 per gallon.

Tuesday, April 29th

14th Annual Striped Bass Tournament has been changed to the 10th & 11th of May.
With the creeks, river and expected weather, we thought it best to cancel the 3rd & 4th dates.
Current moving very rapidly, muddy & debris from the rain.
Water temperatures have dropped down several degrees. Boats went out today, but little results.

Bait available: Bloods, Sands, Nightcrawlers, Live, Iced & frozen herring.

Entrant forms: 14th Annual Striped Bass Tournament

9th Annual Kids Fishing Tournament

Saturday, April 27th

Short report - Bait available; Live herring, iced herring, frozen herring, Bloodoworms & Sandworms. Will open Sunday morning at 7:00 am, closing 6:00 pm. Weather seems to have shut down the fishing just a little. Still saw several stripers come in for cleaning with additional reports of trollers and baiters doing fairly well.
Season has just started. Larger schools have not arrived yet.
Stripers boats have started arriving for the month of May.

Wednesday, April 23rd

We could not ask for a better April than this year's. The Rondout Creek has been very productive with herring and stripers. Does not matter if you are using live bait, cut bait or lures, many stripers are being landed by boaters and shore fishermen. The Hudson around Kingston and Esopus had been a little slow, today reports were of the larger males showing up. Most reports of the stripers being landed have been been of catch n' release,
with a few going home for dinner.

Numbers have ranged from 1 - 30 stripers being boated, but released.

Water temperatures; Rondout Creek, surface temp. 58 - 59 degrees.
Hudson River; Esopus Meadows, 20' down 50 -51 degrees.

Bait Available; LIVE Herring, Iced Herring, Frozen Herring & Sandworms.
Delivery of Bloods and Sands late Friday afternoon.

Tournament coming up soon, get your registration in now.
T-shirts may not be available to late entrants.

Friday, April 18th

Great day on the Rondout Creek and Kingston area of the Hudson River. Large schools of
herring and even larger schools of stripers are being noted on the fishfinders.
Boaters are doing excellent with their lures. Shore fishermen have had a great week using iced herring.

This weekend is going to be a great weekend with the weather, lots of herring
for the stripers to chase and now bloods and sands to add to their diet.
It has been a few years since we have had an April like this one.
If you boat is ready, get it in and enjoy this early striper season.

Water temp in the Rondout; 58 degrees, Hudson River 50 degrees

Bait Available: Bloodworms, Sandworms, Live Herring, Iced & frozen herring

Tuesday, April 14th

River & Rondout have become cloudy, but no debris. Just a little stirring up from the windy days lately.
Water temperature - Esopus Meadows 50 degrees, 20' down; Rondout Creek 55 degrees, surface temp.

Herring have been arriving steadily, with stripers following right behind.
Reports from River Road by the fishing wall and Lighthouse Park have been very good.
Eddyville Falls has produced lots of herring and stripers both, plus bullheads, catfish, eels and
all those little guys that love bloods and herring for dinner.
Trolling by the Kingston Lighthouse, Baiting by the Esopus Meadows, Sitting by the launch ramp in Sleightsburg have all been producing stripers enough to make everyone appreciate this unexpected early season.

The push is on to get the boats in the water, tackle ready, techniques is hand and the hope for some to land the record striper. but for most just to land a legal size striper to take home for dinner.

Bait available: Iced herring @ $1.50 ea
Frozen herring @ $5.00 per bag (3 in a bag)

Should have bloods & sands this weekend, be prepared for small worms, but the pricing less than last year. Beaches are still cold and the worms this early in the season are small.

Tournament coming up quickly - Certified has the first tournament May 3rd & 4th.
Dutchess Federation will not be holding their tournament this year.
No tournament the second week.

If interested in a one day fishing contest on Saturday, May 10th, let me know.

Kids tournament the third Saturday, May 17th.

Wallkill-Marlboro Tournament, May 17th & 18th.

Saugerties Boat Club Tournament, May 18th

Friday, April 11th

Today was a great day on the Rondout Creek. Herring at the Eddyville Falls in numbers.
Small Stripers following thru for their dinner. River conditions are great,
very little debris, you can see down a couple of feet in the river.
Temperatures ranging in the Rondout Creek around 48 degrees and in the River 45 degrees.
Bait shop was very busy after the word went out that we had iced herring.
Keep your fingers crossed that no rain and flooding will occur.
It would be nice to have an additional two-three weeks of fishing.
Regulations are basically the same as last year except for:

Shad being Catch n' Release only.
No live eels will be available this season again.
Wholesalers will not go the expense of certifying the bait for above the GW Bridge.
You can catch your own eels in the Hudson, keeping in mind that they must be between 8" and 14".
Prefer that you use circle hooks, 2 poles in the water at a time, 1 keeper per day over 18".
Once you have your keeper, you can continue fishing, but Catch m' Release only.
No gaffing, culling, netting, etc. Keep with the DEC Regulations.

Live Herring: Live herring can only be purchased if you come by boat, bike or walk.
No live herring in car, trucks or baitwells on boats being towed.
You can gig or net your own herring for your use, but you can not take it home.
You can purchase iced & frozen herring that has been bagged, tagged, salted and dated.

Bloodworms & Sandworms will be available next week. It looks like the price may be less than last year.
Hard to think that something has decreased in today's economy.

Certified Scale will be set-up again on the front deck for everyone's use.
Fishing tables will be set up for you use, but please clean up after using them.
